Shokannon is also known as Kannon Bosatsu (Bosatsu of mercy and salvation),
Sho-Kannon was named after the sound of the Bosatsu voice,
which means that he is always watching people and will save them in a moment.
It is one of the Six Kannon-Bosatsu and is said to save people who are lost on the road to hell.
When saving the afflicted, the goddess changes herself into various forms,
such as the Six Kannon-Bosatsu (Senju-Kannon, Eleven-faced-Kannon, etc.)
and the Thirty-three Kannon-Bosatsu as well. To distinguish it from the variant Kannon, it is called Sho-Kannon.
Incidentally, the Heart Sutra explains the merits of Kannon Bodhisattva.
